Parenting and Advocating for Gender-Expansive Youth

Much of the conversation about gender diversity focuses on the needs of transgender young people. Yet a growing number of children and youth are asserting an identity or presenting themselves in ways outside of the traditional boy/girl binary. Rather than switching boxes, they are defining their own or rejecting them entirely. Supporting these young people brings a variety of challenges that are unique. In a society designed around the gender binary, working with institutions such as schools or sports leagues, communicating with family members, and navigating traditions and rituals can all be exhausting. This session will explore the many ways that non-binary, gender-expansive youth need specific support and resources to preserve their authentic sense of self, as well as ways for families and caregivers to navigate this uncertain terrain.
