Gender diversity impacts all members of a family, including one’s siblings. Many young people face their own social challenges as they are questioned about their sibling’s gender. Some may feel the need to defend their sibling, while others may be angry to have been put into this position. As adults look to meet the unique needs of a transgender or gender-expansive young person, it is not uncommon for siblings to feel left out. What are some of the important considerations that must be taken into account for caregivers and professionals as they seek to support the siblings of gender diverse youth? How can they balance the needs of all of the young people in the equation? What do the siblings of a gender-expansive child need and how might they be showing you?
