When Families Don't Agree: Counseling and Legal Implications

One of the most painful experiences for a gender-expansive youth is getting caught in the crossfire between two (or more) parents who cannot come to an agreement about what will be best for their child. The fields of mental health and law have not always been effective at curbing parents' confusion and mutual antagonism, nor worked together to do so. However, it is possible for parents to minimize the harm to their child by focusing on their child’s best interests. This session will discuss, from both a mental health and legal perspective, ways to facilitate dialogue and, if needed, encourage mediation, court action, and/or mental health services to help parents when they do not see eye to eye concerning their child's gender health.
