Keeping Your Family Together with a Gender-Expansive Child

Almost every family feels a strain when a child identifies outside binary gender boxes, and no two family members make this journey at the same pace. Many families have to fight hard to stay together as they stretch and grow to understand and support their transgender or otherwise gender-expansive child. Sadly, sometimes family members cannot make this journey with us, leaving us wondering how to navigate conflict. Knowing that the best learning happens among the participants themselves, we’ll create a safe forum to talk openly about our fears, challenges, and wins, and to share some of our strategies for keeping our families together. PFLAG is a national nonprofit organization with more than 300 chapters comprised of parents, families, friends and allies working with the LGBT community. PFLAG is the first national LGBT organization to be fully trans inclusive and the only one focused on keeping families together.
