This workshop will feature a new film and discussion by award winning directors and Joe Wilson. Ho'onani: A Place in the Middle is the story of a ten-year old girl who becomes the leader of a high school’s hula group traditionally led and performed by men. While born female, Ho'onani has long known that she is “in the middle,” between male and female. She is fortunate to have the support of a teacher who is māhū (an individual in Hawaiian culture who represents a “third gender”). This wonderful film is an example of how binary understandings about gender are far from universal and how a young person can strive to make a difference. Discussion with Joe Wilson to follow.
