Supporting Gender-Expansive Patients: What Healthcare Professionals Should Know

In the effective care and support for gender-expansive young people, the intersections between healthcare and the law are numerous. Too often, care providers are unaware of how legal issues can significantly impact their ability to effectively treat their young patients or the manner in which their treatment may have legal implications. This session will provide a solid perspective about the legal issues they will most likely encounter during the course of care they provide for a gender-expansive child or teen. Whether working with a child and family around issues at school, supporting their efforts to revise personal identity documents, navigate custody disputes, or respond to incidents of discrimination, being mindful about key legal principles is essential.
